What is BWRT® (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®)?

BWRT® (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy®) is a psychological and psychotherapeutic technique developed by UK therapist Terence Watts, MCGI. It’s a unique therapy that prioritizes your privacy, ensuring that you only need to share what you're comfortable with. Often, the practitioner only needs to know how you currently feel and how you'd prefer to feel, making the process both comfortable and effective.

You don't have to talk about everything

One of the things people often appreciate about BWRT® is that you don't necessarily need to talk in detail about a difficult experience.

For some people, being able to talk openly about what has happened is an important part of therapy.

For others, talking through painful experiences in detail can feel overwhelming, uncomfortable or simply unnecessary.

With BWRT®, we can often work with how you feel now and how you would prefer to feel, without you having to explain every detail of what happened.

You remain fully awake and aware throughout the process, and you remain in control.

How does BWRT® work?

BWRT® uses a structured process involving your thoughts, imagination and emotional responses.

Rather than me telling you what to think or how you should feel, I guide you through the process so that you can work with your own responses.

The aim is to help you develop a different response to something that currently causes you difficulty.

This might be a fear, an anxious response, a particular situation, or something from your past that continues to affect you.

What might BWRT® be helpful for?

BWRT® can be used by practitioners to work with a range of difficulties, including:

  • anxiety and stress
  • phobias and fears
  • trauma-related difficulties
  • unwanted emotional responses
  • relationship difficulties
  • grief and loss

Whether BWRT® is appropriate for you depends on your individual circumstances and what you're hoping to get from therapy.

What happens in a BWRT® session?

We'll begin by talking about what has brought you to therapy and what you would like to be different.

I'll explain the process clearly before we start, so you know what to expect.

During the BWRT® process, I'll guide you through a series of steps using your thoughts and imagination. You remain awake and aware throughout, and you can stop or ask questions at any point.

You don't need to remember a complicated process or do anything perfectly.

I'll guide you through it.

BWRT® and Counselling

BWRT® doesn't have to be separate from talking therapy.

Depending on what you need, we may use BWRT® as part of our work together, or we may find that counselling and psychotherapy are more appropriate.

Sometimes it can be helpful to have space to talk and understand what you're experiencing. At other times, you may prefer a more focused approach.

We'll discuss what feels right for you rather than assuming that one approach will suit everyone.

Can BWRT® be done online?

Yes. BWRT® sessions can be offered online, so you don't necessarily need to be based near Nailsworth to work with me. Sessions can take place by video call, giving you the opportunity to access therapy from a private and comfortable space.

Is BWRT® right for you?

You don't need to decide that before getting in touch.

If you're curious about BWRT® or wondering whether it might be suitable for something you're experiencing, we can talk about it during an initial consultation.

You can ask questions and decide whether it feels like the right approach for you.
